Using WordPress to re-purpose an old book

I have an old book I am using for background content on ArchitecturalMillwork.com.  This was a book for architects and builders to use for ideas and it doesn’t have the usual chapter structure of a book.  I am new to WP so it is taking a while to figure out the best way to do things.

Today I discovered the gallery feature.  Some parts of this “book” have an introductory article followed by a few to many pages of drawings with very little text.  By using the gallery feature I can put the text from the interduction at the top of the post or page and then have all the pictures below that.

The system fails if you want to have text for each of the pictures.  Then you will have to insert each one individually.  It also looks like the database has no ability to link a photo for  use in more than one place.  Thus, if you want to use the same picture more than once you will have to upload it twice.

Fortunately, the uploads go quickly.  That may be because I have the turbo feature (Google Gears) enabled and the images are being resized on the local machine before upload.

Architectural Millwork

ArchitecturalMillwork.com is a website based on the contents of a 1928 book published to provide architects, contractors, and home owners design suggestions for their dream house.  It has color renderings on homes and lots of drawings of suggested interior designs.  It shows entry doors, windows, stairs, etc.

Their system was based around a sandardized set of mouldings that could be used to build a variety of designs.  The pictures of those designs should help renovators replace/repair damaged woodwork in old Craftsman style homes.

The site is  only part way built, but has house plans and the moulding pictures.  Still to come are art glass windows and more interior details.

Owner Financing

Owner-Financing.com is a website that educates and informs buyers and sellers about the risks and rewards of seller financing.

In these times of economic uncertainty with falling house prices and difficulty find loans, there are more and more reasons for considering owner financing.  When done well it makes a lot of sense and can work to the advantage of both buyer and seller.  When done poorly it can make life difficult for both.

A unique feature of the site is regular analysis and comment on notes & mortgages which have been submitted to note brokers for purchase.  We explore the strengths and weaknesses of each note we review.  If the note is rejected we explain why and make suggestions for how it could be improved.

Ambrose Bierce

Ambrose Bierce was the terribly cynical author of The Devil’s Dictonary.  It’s a great source we intend to use for some great posters with his quotes.

Domain Portfolio Management

The annual renewal fees for domain names become painful when you have enough of them.  With the rampant speculation in good domains a developer must buy names when they become available.  However, it is really easy to buy more domains, and not so easy to develop websites on them.  As a result it is easy to have several hundred domains waiting for development and earning no income.

We like to put “place holder” sites on most of the domains we are holding for development.  By this I mean we host the site and write a page or two of content about what our plans are for the eventual development.  With a link from one of our other sites the search engines find the new site and the site gets indexed.

These sites don’t have enough content to rank well, but they let the search engines know there are plans in process and provide clue as to what the content will eventually contain.  In the future, when the site gets built out this will help to avoid the “sandbox” and perhaps let the site rank better, sooner.

There is also some pruning which needs to be done.  Domains that were purchased for projects that didn’t develop, domains that look dumb in retrospect, and assorted other mistakes should be allowed to expire.

That leaves some that require more difficult decisions.  For example, we have collected quite an assortment of domains related to pictures and photos.  When first registered three years ago the idea of selling our pictures online seemed promising.  We built place holder sites, wrote some content and let them site.

Now the world is awash in digital photos.  Digital cameras are very cheap and anyone can take pictures and publish them on Flickr or some other online site.  Regular people even publish videos by the millions.  I think some talented photographers will be able to sell their photographs, but I don’t see much potential for the gifted amateur photographer.

On the other hand, I hate to let domains that have been established for three years and may even have a little page rank expire.  I figure renewal and a years hosting for a tiny site is about $8.00 so it doesn’t take much to make it worth holding a name for another year.

I have also had the experience of letting names drop only to realize later that was a big mistake.  So the tendency is to spend more than I should on domain renewals.

German Nutcrackers – DDR, Expertic, Erzgebirge

Vintage German nutcrackers from the Erzgebirge region of Eastern Germany were produced and sold for hard currency under the “Expertic” label.  Many, but not all,  of these nutcrackers had a red and while label on the bottom that included the word “Expertic”, also DDR, and Erzgebirge.

German-Nutcrackers.com is where we have started to build a website focused on these folk art items.  We have some pictures posted and will publish more as we get our collection photographed.

.htaccess & 301 Redirect

If you are updating an old site that has pages indexed in the search engines you don’t want to just move the content to a new page.  If you do, visitors will get a 404 page not found message.  You will also loose any links that may have been pointing to that page.  Neither of these is desirable.

As we make the switch to WordPress with the Thesis them this is going to be an ongoing issue.  Since we are hosted on Linux servers the answer is .htaccess.  This is a file you place in the root folder on your server that tells incoming page requests where to go.  It also tells the search engines this is a permanent change so they should update their information.

There are lots of things which can be done with htaccess commands but it is one of those old, cryptic syntaxes which can be really painful to deal with if you are not an expert.  What seem like very tiny changes can make your whole website vanish.

I did a search and found a tutorial that provided the redirect code which I could add to my existing htaccess file.  This would have been much more difficult if my programmer had not already created an htaccess file to handle some other issues.  Since there was an existing file I could add some simple lines of code to make the changes.

Email Campaigns For Craftspeople

Email campaigns probably work better for most crafts people than building a large website in an effort to  attract search engine traffic.

The truth is, your former customers already know the kind of work you do.  They have proven they like it by putting their money down.  When writing to them you don’t have to spend time assuring them they will like your work, that you work is a good value, etc.  They already know that.

With a regular newsletter you can grow their connection to you and your art.  You can let then know about your schedule of shows and events.  You can tell them about new developments, special sutuations and all sorts of things that make them feel they are special.

Managing such email campaigns is not easy.  Everyone is tired of spam so you must be really careful to avoid any apperance of that (Double Opt In).  You want a system that tracks undelivered mail and automatically deletes bad addresses.  The system should automatically handle address changes and un-subscribe requests.

In addition, you want the email you send to look good and deliver your message in a professional way.

Paul & Erik sit between the craftsperson and the technical back end.  You concentrate on building the content for your email campaigns, we take care of all the technical stuff that makes the process run smoothly.

Could you do all this for yourself?  Of course.  It’s a question of wheither you like doing it and how you value your time.

American Glass Museum Goes Live

AmericanGlassMuseum.com is now published and up to date.  It includes a brief description of our glass related websites and a link to each one.  The idea is that it serves as a “hub” so visitors can easily move from a niche glass sites, such as Kanawha Glass, to the hub and from there to whatever other glass sites they are interested in.

The site includes links to Ebay auctions which are specific to each type of glass.  This allows visitors who may be working to identify a piece of glass they purchased or inherited to see examples which help them in their search.

The individual niche sites will take this identification deeper by exploring the variations in more detail; also with examples.

Online Appraisal Service

For antiques and collectibles valuation based on guidebooks is dead.  Ebay values are far more accurate and reflect values in the real world.  These values change with the market and don’t go out of date.

Auctions can be used to identify the antique or collectible you own and then determine it’s actual cash value.

We build niche content websites for many antiques and collectibles.  OnlineAppraisalService.com will have links to/from these niche sites to help visitors identify what they have and find out what it’s worth.

We think of it as Do It Yourself  (DIY) appraisals.
